DANIEL

Daniel was confirmed in 1871 while the family still lived in Ullnäset. It is the same year that grandfather Jan dies, and father Erik begins to negotiate with the siblings to take over Styggviken.

Like his siblings, he occasionally works for other farmers to raise money. He is looking for a job outside the parish in 1874.

Daniel completes 2 years of military service 1877-78. Then he is at work in Norrland (Hälsingland). There he takes the opportunity to go to the photographer. He probably already has plans to emigrate, and the photo should be for the family to remember him. He's probably saved up for the ticket for a long time. The only thing that is now required of him is to get a relocation certificate from the priest. Since he did his military service, there are no worries.

On May 9 of the following year, he took the boat "Rollo" to Hull in England, from where he continued with Atlantic steamers to Chicago. About 50 people from the home parish are on the same boat, but Daniel visits the police in Gothenburg in another company. He travels with some peers from the neighboring parish of Grängesberg; Erik Eriksson and Anders Jansson, and he also states  that he himself is from Grängesberg and he has now taken the name Engström. They tell the police that they are going to Chicago.

Dan writes to Per Erik in 1897 and refers to a dispute between them which apparently stems from some work they had in the "Mårten mine" and disagreed about the compensation between them. Dan is very angry and writes that "I thought that since you became a man you would improve but your brain is too small to think or say something good and you write that we live in abundance. It is a mistake of you, since the year 93 there has been such bad times that you have never met in Sweden. Last year I worked 6 months and out of the six I have been paid for 2 months, the others I do not know when I get any of. The workshop is in bankruptcy so we cannot get anything there until that runs out. Living from two months' work for a whole year, there will not be much gluttony, as you say.

 Daniel konfirmerades 1871 medan familjen fortfarande bodde i Ullnäset. Det är samma år som farfar Jan dör, och fadern Erik börjar förhandla med syskonen om att ta över Styggviken.

Han arbetar liksom syskonen tidvisför andra bönder, för att dra in pengar. Han söker sig något arbete utanför socknen 1874. 

Daniel fullgör 2 års militärtjänst 1877-78. Därefter befinner han sig på arbete i Norrland (Hälsingland) Där passar han på att gå till fotografen. Antagligen har han redan då planer på att emigrera, och fotot ska vara för att familjen ska minnas honom. Förmodligen har han sparat ihop till biljetten under lång tid. Det enda som nu krävs av honom är att få ett flyttningsbetyg av prästen. Eftersom han gjort sin värnplikt är det inga bekymmer.

Den 9 maj följande år tar han båten "Rollo" till Hull i England, varifrån han fortsätter med atlantångare till Chicago. Med på samma båt är ett 50-tal personer från hemsocknen, men Daniel skriver in sig hos polisen i Göteborg i ett annat sällskap. Han åker med några jämnåriga från grannsocknen Grängesberg; Erik Eriksson och Anders Jansson, och han uppger också själv att han är från Grängesberg och han har nu tagis sig namnet Engström. De uppger för polisen att de ska till Chicago.  .

Dan skriver 1897 till Per Erik och uppehåller sig vid en dispyt dem emellan som tydligen härrör från något arbete de haft i "Mårtengruvan" och varit oense om ersättningen dem emellan. Dan är mycket arg och skriver att "jag trode att sedan du blef mann att du skulle förbettra dig men din hjärna är för liten för att tenka eller att tala något gott och du skriver att vi lefver i överflöd det är mistag af dig, sedan året 93 som har det varit så dåliga tider som du aldrig har mött i Sverige. I fjol arbetade jag 6 månader och utaf de sex har jag fått betalt för 2 månader, de andra vet jag icke när jag får något af. Verkstaden än under konkurs så vi kan icke få något där innan det tar slut. Lefva af två månaders arbete ett helt år, det blir icke mycket frosseri, som du säger.
