SOFIAS LETTERS

Her letter arrives on February 17. She too is upset about the neighbours' proposal to send her mother to Pärlby poorhouse.

She suggests that the croft be sold. Sofia says that she would love to send some money but that it is not possible because it is such a bad time now.

On April 11, she writes again, and appeals to Per Erik and Sara to be kind to mother and not quarrel with her. She also wonders if her mother remembers her - "every night I dream of her".

She repeats that she would like to send money but that the family currently has no income, her husband has no job and she cannot raise that issue with him.

She also asks when Hanna left her mother.

June 7 comes the next letter. She wishes she was home so she could help her mother, but it's impossible, it's such bad times. She writes that Dan has a constant job on the ship, but it is difficult to get a salary. But he has a small house that he built on the company's land.

Then come letters August 19 and October 16 and she complains about being so far from her mother "because she has carried us under her heart and taken many tired steps for us so I would do everything I could for her if I could come and see her" she writes.

She thinks that Per Erik and Sara, who are so kind and take care of the mother, should get the croft. And so she wants them to read the letter to mom.

She also wants a little memory of her mother, a few hairs, in the same way she got after her father.

She says once again that they must not leave her in the care of the poorhouse, especially not now that she can tell when she needs (toilet) that won't be necessary.

Sofia has been at Dan's home and convinced him to send some money so that her mother's debt to a trader can be paid. "it was no more than he could do, he has had steady work all along"

February 12 following year, Sofia writes that she does not want to give power of attorney for the sale of the croft "I thought it would offend our old mother too much if she would lose her earthly home this soon, I remember exactly what she mourned if she sold a cow or what it was she kept everything so tender "

Mother dies March 31 1899, still in Per Erik's and Sara's custody. Sofia has, as it seems, later sent some money. It appears from a letter dated April 18, 1899, in response to her being informed that her mother had died.

Hennes brev kommer 17 februari. Hon är också upprörd över grannarnas förslag att sända modern till Pärlby fattigstuga. Hon föreslår att torpet ska säljas. Sofia säger att hon så gärna skulle vilja sända lite pengar men att det inte går för det är så dåliga tider nu.

Den 11 april skriver hon igen, och vädjar till Per Erik och Sara att vara snälla mot mamma och inte gräla på henne. Hon undrar också om mamma kommer ihåg henne - "varende natt så drömmer jag om henne".

Hon upprepar att hon skulle vilja sända pengar men att familjen just nu inte har några inkomster, hennes man har inget arbete och hon kan inte ta upp den frågan med honom.

Hon undrar också när Hanna lämnade mamma.

7 juni kommer nästa brev. Hon önskar att hon vore hemma så hon kunde hjälpa sin mamma, men det är omöjligt, det är så dåliga tider. Hon skriver att Dan har ständigt arbete på skeppet, men svårt att få ut lön. Men han har ett litet hus som han byggt på företagets mark.

Sedan kommer brev 19 augusti och 16 oktober och hon beklagar sig över att vara så långt från sin mamma "för hon har burit oss under sitt hjärta och gått många trötta steg för oss så jag skulle göra allt jag kunde för henne om jag kunde komma och se henne" skriver hon.

Hon tycker att Per Erik och Sara som är så snälla och sköter mamma ska få torpet. Och så vill hon att de läser brevet för mamma.

Hon vill också ha ett litet minne av mamma, några hårstrån, på samma sätt som hon fick efter sin far.

Hon säger en gång till att dom inte får lämna henne till fattigvården, det behövs särskilt inte nu när hon kan säga till när hon behöver.

Sofia har varit hos Dan och övertygat honom om att sända lite pengar så att mammas skuld till en handlare kan betalas. "det var inte mer än han kunde göra, han har haft stadigt arbete hela tiden"

12 februari påföljande år skriver Sofia att hon inte vill lämna fullmakt till torpets försäljning "jag tänkte det skulle stöta vår gamla moder för mycket om hon skulle mista sitt jordiska hem så snart, jag kommer just ihåg vad hon sörjde om hon skulle selja en ko eller vad det var hon höll allt så tjert" 

Modern dör den 31 mars 1899, då fortfarande i Per Eriks och Saras vård. Sofia har, som det verkar, senare sänt lite pengar. Det framgår av ett brev 18 april 1899 som är svar på att modern dött.
